The goal of this course is to aquaint the student with the theoretical and practical issues involved in doing univariate and multivariate spectral analysis of signals obtained in oceanographic contexts. Additional topics include bispectral analysis, directional spectral estimates from array measurements, and introductions to wavelet transforms and principal component analysis.

• Quick review of statistical measures.
• Fourier Series and Integrals, Discrete and Continuous Fourier Transforms.
• Fast Fourier Transform, Nonparametric Spectral Estimation, Confidence Intervals
• Statistics of narrow-banded seas. Wave groups.
• Hilbert Transforms, Envelopes and Side-band Instabilities.
• Bispectral Analysis of Nonlinear Waves.
• Directional Spectrum Estimates from Array Measurements.
• (time permitting) Wavelet Transforms.
• (time permitting) Principal Component Analysis.

Grading: The semester grade will be based on:

• individually assigned homeworks, covering material that each student definitely needs to understand the mechanics of.
• term project report (individual or working groups, as approved by instructor).
