CIEG 672, Fall 2009
Homeworks
- Due Sept 21: D&D, Chapter 2: 2.2, 2.4, 2.5, 2.12.
- Due Sept 30: D&D, Chapter 2: 2.8. Chapter 3: 3.2, 3.9, 3.10
- Due Oct 7: see handout
- Due Oct. 19: D&D, Chapter 4: 4.2 (kinetic energy too, based on your solution to previous homework) , 4.6, 4.8. Chapter 10: 10.3
- Due Oct. 26: see handout
- Due Nov. 9: D&D, 4.10, 4.12, 4.16. Additional problem: For the two layer case (in x and z), consider the effect of having the upper
layer moving at horizontal velocity U while the lower layer is stationary (in the mean). Solve for the resulting interfacial wave.
Consider the limit of large upper layer depth and upper layer density = air density. This is basically the case of wind blowing over water
with no friction accounted for. Do you see any indications of interesting behavior in the results? Describe.
- Due Nov. 20: D&D, Chapter 4: 4.11. Chapter 5: 5.1, 5.12. Additional problem: For the case where the bottom is moving (as in a
tsunami generation process), reconsider the construction of the energy balance equation and obtain a source term that shows how energy is
being added to the system by the ground motion.
Midterm Exam
The midterm exam will be a 2 day take home exam, handed out at the end of class on October 26 and returned at the beginning of class on
October 28.
